Still Lifes
My aim in these paintings is to capture the effect of light and shadow creating a juxtaposition of shapes and colours by the placement of objects, food and background fabrics.

Florals
Here I will often concentrate on a single flower against an essentially plain background, the essence again being shape and shadow; sometimes, though, I will use a fabric as background but with the same general aim.

City Scenes
My earliest “hard edge” paintings date to immediate “post-training” years in Chicago and the influence of American artists who used that style to emphasise simplicity. Shown here are one Chicago scene and one in London that demonstrate my interest in “shape and shadow”.

The emphasis here is on “capturing the moment”, not on any sense of portraiture, and many of my paintings will show people from behind or the side.

The Artist
Marjorie Collins is a painter based in Oxford, having lived there since moving from her birthplace of Chicago nearly fifty years ago. She trained at the University of Michigan and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the later stages, she moved away from the Abstract Expressionism that was being taught at that time and instead, influenced by the work of the American artists Richard Estes, Edward Hopper and Alex Katz, developed her own version of Abstract Realism. Her early work was primarily on canvas and this continued for many years, but now the majority of her work is in watercolour on paper where her use of colour and hard edges stlll prevails.
